Volcanoes Safaris and DEG COVID 19 Relief Project

During 2021 Volcanoes Safaris has worked in partnership with DEG to provide a series of projects for healthcare and training to support communities in Rwanda and Uganda affected by Covid-19.

The project has provided Covid-19 infection prevention training, soap and handwashing equipment to over 2,200 families; provided emergency food donations to over 1,600 families; donated 85 5,000 litre water and 190 sheep and goats tanks to the local communities; and provided over 10,000 face masks to people living in areas neighbouring the gorilla and chimp parks.

In addition, the Kyambura Coffee Cooperative has expanded by recruiting and training an additional 10 members and planting over 500 more coffee plants. Training has been given to enable the cooperative to improve the quality and quantity of coffee produced, leading to greater future financial returns. Our award-winning hospitality training program has trained 24 young people and given them a practical introduction to the industry. Six of the trainees are now permanently employed in Volcanoes Safaris Lodges.

We would like to thank DEG, Volcanoes Safaris staff and management and Volcanoes Safaris Partnership  staff for their support and hard work implementing this important project.

Established in 2009, the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust creates long-term, self-sustaining projects that enrich the livelihoods of local communities, promote the conservation of the great apes, restore natural habitats and work with communities and institutions to reduce human-wildlife conflict. As part of their stay at Volcanoes Lodges, guests get an opportunity to visit these projects and to share the lives of the local communities.
