Volcanoes Safaris’ eco-luxe lodges blend seamlessly into the tree-covered hills of Rwanda and Uganda. Constructed using traditional techniques and managed by locals, each lodge (Bwindi, Kyambura Gorge, and Mount Gahinga lodges are in Uganda; Virunga Lodge is in Rwanda) takes care to preserve the fragility of the environment and work with neighboring communities to deliver on the company’s claims of authenticity. Whichever African adventure you choose—tracking the mountain gorillas of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or sharing in the heritage of the indigenous Batwa tribe, for example—you can experience the great ape parks at their best. What’s more, in 2017, to commemorate the death of conservationist Dian Fossey, Virunga Lodge has commissioned the Dian Fossey Map Room, where guests can celebrate her legacy.

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.
Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.
