The Intore Dance

12 December 2021

The Intore Dance

The traditional Rwandan ballet called ‘The Intore’ is based on the courtly victory dance of the Rwandan Miami (Kings). Being selected as an Intore was a great honour - they would receive a privileged education, intensive combat training and they held a high status within the court.

Today, the dancers use traditional weapons and wear brightly coloured clothes and long flowing white hairpieces as they perform their dance. Learn to play the Intore drumbeat, or the first steps of the Intore dance, as you join in with the Intore for an afternoon performance overlooking the spectacular Virunga volcanoes at Virunga Lodge.
