Kibale Lodge named one of the best new hotels in the world by AFAR magazine

We are honoured that AFAR magazine has named Kibale Lodge one of the best new hotels in the world in 2025.

This is a landmark moment on the journey of Volcanoes Safaris.

In 1997 when I started building Mount Gahinga Camp on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC, the Great Lakes region was beginning to stabilise. Building an international level hotel seemed a distant dream.

Today Volcanoes lodges are the award-winning leading luxury lodges of the region.

Praveen Moman, founder of Volcanoes Safaris, sitting under a tree with Volcanoes Safaris team at the site of the new Kibale Lodge, the Chimpanzee Safari Lodge in Uganda.

Kibale Lodge embodies the Volcanoes’ vision of small, handmade lodges, of simplicity and sophistication, rooted in the rich landscapes, cultures and traditions of the peoples of the Great Lakes.

Central to our vision is empowering local artisans to drive the design, building and decoration of our lodges.

The AFAR award is a tribute to the aesthetic accomplishments, passion and dedication of the Kibale design team.

Kibale Lodge’s hospitality embodies the deep traditions of the local Batoro people, based on values and respect for family and elders.

Each guest has a personal butler and is given a pet name, an empaako, during their stay, a mark of respect.

The lodge menu includes locally inspired dishes, such as firinda, a delicacy served at marriage ceremonies.

Kibale Lodge is the perfect base for trekking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, the ‘Primate Capital of the World’. Meet experts from our conservation partners: Kibale Chimpanzee Project and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Our newly-launched, curated 7-night chimpanzee safari takes you to the iconic sites of Kibale and Kyambura Gorge.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Safari Activities

Chimpanzee Tracking

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.

Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.
