I looked up adventure travel online. Wikipedia’s definition is “Adventure travel is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel with perceived (and possibly actual) risk, and potentially requiring specialized skills and physical exertion.” Clearly wikipedia needs to get out more and get their adventure on.
Yes, risk is often, but not always involved. More importantly, there is a bigger internal and external landscape than just risk in adventure travel. According to The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) (www.adventure travel.biz), a 1,000+ member strong organization, “Adventure travel may be any tourist activity that includes the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange and connection with nature.”
Praveen Moman, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Volcanoes Safaris (www. volcanoessafaris.com) and long-standing member of ATTA said it well, “Adventure travel means finding oneself, discovering the essence of the human spirit, stretching yourself physically and emotionally.”
ATTA has been corralling Moman and kin- dred spirits like him from all over the globe in the adventure travel trade for a well over a decade. The Seattle based association’s global members are an impassioned group of tour op- erators and accommodations, tourism boards, industry partners, associations, travel advisors gear suppliers and adventure media.
