Kwibuka 25

As Rwanda commemorates the 25th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in April 1994 we pause to remember the tragic event and its effect on the country and people.

Twenty five years later, Rwanda has rebuilt itself from the ashes and is a safe and thriving country. Travellers visit from all over the world.

As the President of Rwanda said speaking at the Commemoration: "We Rwandans have granted ourselves a new beginning. We exist in a state of permanent commemoration, every day, in all that we do."

Volcanoes Safaris has been operating in Rwanda since 2000.  As members of Volcanoes Safaris staff participate in commemoration events, we remember especially the loss suffered by the families of our staff and of the communities who live around Virunga Lodge, which opened 2014.

Safari Activities

Chimpanzee Tracking

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.

Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.
