Uganda: Top Destination for Birding!

You may or may not be aware that Uganda is currently one of the most exciting destinations for birders in the world. The Albertine Rift and the surrounding areas have a spectacular diversity! Recently Johnny Kamugish, renomated birding guide in Uganda, spotted what looked like a Sooty Chat but soon discovered that it was, in fact, a Ruaha Chat - the second of its kind seen in Uganda! Birding around Uganda is one of the most exciting and exhilarating experiences for people interested in birdwatching, with a variety of habitats and ecosystems that provide the opportunity to spot a huge range of species. Mgahinga National Park, close to Volcanoes Mount Gahinga Lodge is home to a particularly diverse selection of birds. 79 species have been recorded so far, including a number of endemic species! The total for the Virunga Conservation Area is over 300. Queen Elizabeth National Park counts as many as 600 species! The official bird list for the area is very small compared to the number of birds that actually can be found there. This species count is also increasing in part thanks to the wetland reclamation work of the VSPT, which means that experienced (and maybe even a few amatuer) birders may be able to add a new entry to the official listings.
