Praveen Moman, Co-Founder of Volcanoes Safaris, has joined the Board of Imbabazi Orphanage in Rwanda.
Imbabazi Orphanage was established by Roz Carr to care for children who were lost or orphaned by the Rwanda genocide of 1994.
Rosamond 'Roz' Carr led an extraordinary and eventful life. Born in 1912, she gave up her life as a New York socialite and fashion illustrator to travel to the Congo with her husband, the British hunter Kenneth Carr. After her divorce in 1949, she settled down on her plantation in the foothills of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains. Roz lived in Rwanda for more than 50 years and dedicated much of her life to the people of Rwanda.
Since opening in December 1994, the orphanage cared for more than 400 children. Many of them have now been reunited with family members or are living independently. The thriving Imbabazi Foundation continues to support these children. Visits to Imbabazi are a popular tourist activity, for the orphanage's significant place in history and Roz's beautiful English gardens.
Roz died in 2006 at the age of 94 years old. The Imbabazi Foundation continues her work, preparing the children for independent lives through education and vocational training.
“I can only surmise that God didn’t feel I was ready to have children until I was 82 years old. Then he sent me forty all at once.”
Roz Carr, Land of a Thousand Hills.
