Volcanoes Safaris Virunga Lodge in Rwanda and Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda have were listed in Travel + Leisure readers’ favorite safari lodges in Africa 2023. Virunga Lodge was listed second and Mount Gahinga Lodge fifth, completing an amazing double recognition for Volcanoes Safaris. We are incredibly honored to receive these awards.
Volcanoes Safaris was also honoured to be named winner of the Marie Claire UK Sustainability Awards 2023 in the Independent Hotels category. Special recognition was given to the Kyambura Gorge Eco-tourism Project, Bwindi Bar, and the Mount Gahinga Batwa Village, projects organised by Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust.
And additionally, Priscilla and Emmanuel, lodge managers with Volcanoes Safaris, have been celebrating with the lodge teams after the recent recognition of Kyambura and Virunga in the 2023 Conde Nast Readers Choice Awards!

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.
Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.
